At just 20 years old, Abigail Serna never imagined she would be facing a cancer diagnosis while preparing to begin her senior year at Louisiana State University. Abigail is currently studying English with a concentration in creative writing, and for as long as she can remember, her dream has been to build a career centered around storytelling, publishing, and helping others find comfort in words. Instead of spending her summer preparing for classes, internships, and her future, she is now preparing for treatments, hospital visits, and the uncertainty that comes with cancer at such a young age.
If you know Abigail, you know how much she loves writing, music, and school, and how important finishing her degree is to her. She is doing everything she can to continue chasing the life and future she has worked so hard for while also fighting one of the hardest battles of her life.
Abigail was raised by her grandmother, and watching her grandmother struggle to raise her while carrying so much on her own shaped every part of who she is today. Growing up, there were many moments where life felt uncertain, and she learned early what it meant to go without, to worry, and to fight for every opportunity placed in front of her. Seeing how hard her grandmother worked and everything she sacrificed made Abigail determined to build a different future for both of them. Getting accepted into LSU was more than just getting into college to her — it felt like proof that everything they went through meant something. Being so close now to earning her degree means everything to her because it represents years of struggle, resilience, sacrifice, and what hard work truly looks like. Cancer has interrupted her life in ways she never could have imagined, but she refuses to let it take away the future that her grandmother fought so hard to help her reach.
This diagnosis has affected every part of Abigail’s life — physically, emotionally, academically, and financially. Between medical expenses, treatment costs, transportation, and the difficulty of balancing school and work while fighting this illness, support from others means more than words can express. Going from working three jobs and being a full-time student to only being able to attend doctor’s appointments has completely turned her life upside down, but she remains determined to continue pursuing her education and her dreams despite this diagnosis.
